Turf
1 Fri Guy 50-1
Ummm...no.
2 Red Rocks 7-2
Trying for a repeat, and could easily
get it. He needs to beat Dylan Thomas, and that one won't get his
preferred firm footing.
3 Better Talk Now 9-2
The 8yo tries the race for a fourth
time, and has a win and a runner up finish to his credit. There
is very little speed signed on to set up his late kick, however.
4 Shamdinan 20-1
His first off the boat was very good following a drubbing in the Irish Derby. His last two he has showed nothing and I see no reason to expect a sudden turn around.
5 Grand Couturier 10-1
His figures just seem a little low to win here.
6 English Channel 5-2
A close 3rd in this race last year. He has been steady this year, though he did manage to lose twice at short odds despite getting nice setups.
7 Dylan Thomas 7-5
The obvious favorite comes in off a
win in the world's most prestigious turf race. Previous winners
of the race are 0 for 9. Most of them, like this one, only came
to the Turf as an afterthought. His trainer is questioning how he
will handle the soft ground, which isn't what you want to hear if you
are thinking of singling this short priced horse.
8 Transduction Gold 30-1
Why is he here? I guess it is better than a 7 horse field.
RECAP: Tough race to judge
with little speed to set this up for the late runners. I'm going
to go with Red Rocks since this has been a goal all year long, as
opposed to Dylan Thomas. This was a late decision to come, and
the main goal has already been achieved. Throw in the O'Brien's
doubt about him on the ground and that is enough for me to be leary of
him at even money or less.
